At turns touchingly observant, outright hilarious and profoundly heartbreaking, the newest anthology of the art and creative writing programs at Miriam's Kitchen, Soft Concrete Stairs is now available for purchase. This anthology contains a collection of the most exceptional work from the after-breakfast art and writing workshops at Miriam's Kitchen from 2000-2002.
Since 1994, Miriam's Kitchen has offered after-breakfast workshops in art and creative writing to men and women who are homeless and formerly homeless. From 1998-2000, our volunteer leaders offered 156 visual arts and 312 creative workshops to homeless and formerly homeless artists, providing a supportive forum for artistic expression and a chance to share work with the larger community. During these years, the Miriam's artists and writers held over 50 public readings of their work, and also held 5 gallery exhibitions (at Studio 1019, MLK Library, GW's Colonnade Gallery, Tryst Cafe, and Howard University's Blackburn Center Gallery) and produced a collaborative 5-panel mural with students from an elementary, middle and high school in DC.
To obtain your own copy of the newest anthology and read for yourself the varied and compelling works by our homeless neighbors, send an email to scott@miriamskitchen.org. The anthologies are available for only $15.
