Since 1994, Miriam’s Kitchen has offered After-Breakfast therapeutic workshops. Every Wednesday since 1994 a group of poets meets to read, discuss, and write poetry. Throughout the years Miriam’s has added groups to the After-Breakfast Program such as additional writing groups, a daily visual arts workshop, a geography group, and a George Washington University student-led discussion group. An average of 100 Miriam’s guests per month currently attend. During these unique workshops, our Case Management staff and volunteers are able to spend more time with participants and develop trusting relationships with our guests.

The After-Breakfast Program also allows us to provide public education on the issues of homelessness. The Miriam's Poets are a group of writers from the writing workshops who began meeting together after breakfast in the late fall of 1994 to share poems and stories. The Poets have read and performed at over 50 local venues since 1998, including: Georgetown University, the 1995 National COOL Conference, American University, George Washington University, Garnet Patterson Middle School, the Kennedy Center, the Fannie Mae Foundation, Borders Books, McLean High School, Wilson High School, Roasters on the Hill, Barnes & Noble Books, Archbishop Carroll High School, SOHO Tea and Coffee, and Miriam's Kitchen. Everywhere our poets read, their honest, moving, and talented voices impress the audience. Their poems offer an insight into homelessness that few housed people have the chance to hear, as well as an opportunity to enter into an open dialogue about homelessness with members of the community. This dialogue provides an educational experience emphasizing the humanity of those who suffer from homelessness and leads to a more personal understanding of the issue — one that cannot be fully realized by reading an article in the paper, studying homelessness in a class, or even volunteering. If you are interested in bringing the Miriam's Poets to read at your organization, contact matt@miriamskitchen.org.
