Like Father, Like Daughter
For many of us, this Father’s Day weekend is a time to show our gratitude for the wonderful role models our fathers (and father figures) have been for us.
In talking with some of the dads who are a special part of Miriam’s Kitchen, we’ve found that the best gift a dad can receive is something quite simple: time with their loved ones.
That’s exactly what keeps long-time volunteer John Moffet waking up at 4:30 am once a month to cook breakfast at Miriam’s Kitchen. For John, volunteering is as much about being with our guests as it is having the opportunity to volunteer alongside his daughter, Marla.
“Marla is very giving and sets an example for me. She’s always had that big smile on her face, but I get to see it all the time when we’re at Miriam’s Kitchen together.”
For the past year and a half, John and Marla have done it all at Miriam's Kitchen. Whether they are cracking never-ending cartons of eggs, flipping hundreds of pancakes, or taking orders from Chef Steve (who John lovingly calls Admiral)--they come to Miriam’s Kitchen because they are able to give back together.
“When I come to Miriam’s Kitchen, I get to see my dad’s smile and joy when he’s interacting with volunteers and guests. I love seeing him enjoying the moment with our guests and making them smile and laugh in an authentic way. It makes our experience so pure and enriches our gratitude in life.”
Seeing generosity and gratitude passed from one generation to the next is inspiring and life-changing, and we're so grateful to all of you for sharing those values with us.
Happy Father's Day to all the great dads (and father figures) we know.
