Miriam's Kitchen: There's room at our table.
Services and Programs Meet the Staff Board of Directors

Scott Schenkelberg is the Executive Director of Miriam's Kitchen.  He is responsible for managing all administrative, financial, and programmatic aspects of Miriam's Kitchen.  Scott has over ten years of nonprofit management experience.  Before joining Miriam's Kitchen, Scott was Bread for the City's Development Director and before that he was Resource Coordinator at So Others Might Eat for three years.  He holds a BA from Grinnell College and, in keeping with his Midwestern roots, enjoys a good bratwurst and fresh corn on the cob.  He is also endlessly fascinated by his son Jack.  Scott can be reached at scott@miriamskitchen.org.

Miriam's Director of Kitchen Operations and Volunteer Services, Steven Badt, holds a BS in Political Science from the University of Vermont and a Masters Degree in Nonprofit Management from the University of Maryland's University College. Before arriving at Miriam's in July 2001, Steve worked as a restaurant chef for seven years in New York, Boston and Washington, DC. In addition, he worked as both a chef and development associate at the nonprofit organization Food & Friends in Washington, DC. He combines his restaurant management and culinary skills with his nonprofit experience and education to create a challenging, professional and fun atmosphere for Miriam's valued volunteers, as well as an enhanced menu for our guests. When he is not spending his time with his son Henry, Steve enjoys a competitive game of ultimate Frisbee. His email address is steve@miriamskitchen.org.

Security Officer Tony Butts is a lifelong resident of DC.  He started working at Miriam’s in April of 1994, which makes him the staff member with the longest tenure.  Tony says that “working with people is what I do best.”  We agree.  We also think that Tony has one of the best smiles on our staff, and it’s a shame he looks so mean in this photo.  Tony’s life outside of Miriam’s includes jazz, the Redskins, and the racetrack (horses, not greyhounds).  He has been married for 38 years and has three children.

Catherine Crum, Deputy Director, came to Miriam's in 2003.  Catherine oversees Case Management, the After-Breakfast Program, and Arnold's Place Transitional House, as well as the fabulous security team at Miriam's Kitchen.  Before working at Miriam's, Catherine worked at Whitman-Walker Clinic's Austin Center for Health and Living for nine years.  She holds a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a Master of Public Administration degree from American University.  Catherine's true passion in life, however, is promoting the Miriam's Kitchen blue t-shirt.  This year alone, she completed one Ironman and three marathons while sporting the piece of blue apparel, and she is scheduled to take fashion to new levels on the New York runways this fall.   In October 2007, Catherine convinced Adam Rocap to appear on BBC World News in the blue shirt (no lie).  Her dreams for the future include getting a mention in Talley's first novel and being a back-up singer in Darrell’s band. Catherine can be reached at catherine@miriamskitchen.org.

Miriam’s Director of Development, Sara Gibson, brings nearly ten years of experience in     nonprofits to Miriam’s.  Sara has served as the Director of Development at the Sitar Arts Center and at Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington.  Most recently, while in Paris during 2007, Sara served as a development and organizational consultant for French and U.S. clients.  Sara has also served as a caseworker at Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington and as a researcher at the Corporate Executive Board.  She holds a BA in Political Science and Communications from Saint Mary’s College in Indiana and has a passion for two Notre Dames—the football team and the cathedral in Paris.  When not at Miriam’s, Sara loves to cook, craves the next book she’ll have time to read and searches for places to dance the polka.  Her email address is: sara@miriamskitchen.org

Nathan Holst joined the Miriam’s staff as a case manager in August 2006 through the Lutheran Volunteer Corps.  He is originally from Duluth MN where he learned to love the quiet of the woods (yup, one of those introverts) and the beauty of Lake Superior.  Nathan received his undergraduate degree in social work from Concordia College in Moorhead MN.  While in DC, his favorite activities include biking to exotic places (like Great Falls and Mount Vernon), going to all the amazing museums, reading books, and going to the free concerts at the Kennedy Center.  Nathan, who can be reached at nathan@miriamskitchen.org, is always ready to do an African dance and has been known to be a little bit corny from time to time.

Darrell Jones joined the Miriam’s Kitchen team in August 2007.    Darrell enjoys his reputation as the most laid back security officer Miriam’s has ever seen, but we recommend that you definitely don’t try to get past him in the number line at breakfast.  In his other life, Darrell is a back-up singer in a local go-go band.  The path leading to his security/music career has been an inspired one.  Darrell won a “Beautiful Baby” contest at eight months and won the under-seven Solid Gold Dancer competition at five and a half.  He was featured in “People” magazine in the late 90s as part of Potomac High School’s combination ballet and football training program.  Miriam’s is proud to have Darrell on staff.

Matthew Lang is the House Manager  at Miriam's transitional house, Arnold's Place .   Matt is also  the  Program Manager at Charlie’s Place, another breakfast program for the homeless in DC. On Mondays, Matthew dons yet another cap, acting as a facilitator for his ever - popular poetry group in the After-Breakfast Program.  Matthew  graduated from the University of M aryland,  Eastern Shore in May of 2004 with a bachelor  degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management .  He  is an avid Jeopardy watcher and expert in all things literary and historical. Matthew can be reached at matt@miriamskitchen.org.

Ashley Lawson joined the Miriam’s team in May 2007 as our Volunteer and Development Coordinator.  She is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and will always claim loyalty to the Cleveland Browns.  Ashley graduated from Elon University in North Carolina, where she studied Human Services and Business.  When Ashley is not sporting her apron in Miriam’s kitchen, she loves finding treasures at garage sales, going on road trips, singing karaoke, and building houses with Habitat for Humanity with her new pink toolbelt.  She can be reached at ashley@miriamskitchen.org.

Talley McMonagle joined the Miriam’s Kitchen Case Management team in August 2006 from the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. She graduated this past spring from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she was able to further develop her affinity for cheese while majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Theology and English. She originally hails from Cleveland, Ohio and enjoys reading, writing and traveling. Talley can be reached at talley@miriamskitchen.org.

Amanda Moss is Miriam’s newest case management staff member. Prior to joining Miriam’ s, Amanda worked as a  community support worker at  the Green Door.  Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Amanda received her BS in Psychology from the University of Houston and earned her MA in forensic psychology at Marymount University. In her spare time, Amanda likes to show off her awe-inspiring singer-songwriter talents at local music venues in DC; however, interestingly enough, it was once her childhood dream to be a tiger.

Chrissie Nelson is our summer case management intern, although she is not new to Miriam’s Kitchen! Chrissie started volunteering at Miriam’s Kitchen when she was 11 as a kitchen volunteer and continued to volunteer throughout middle school and high school. Now she attends Lawrence University in Wisconsin and is majoring in history and minoring in Spanish and Ethnic studies. When not at Miriam’s Kitchen,  Chrissie is a swim coach and teaches swimming lessons to kids six to 18. She is also an avid Brett Favre fan, and once camped out at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin to get tickets to the game where he threw his 420th career touchdown pass to tie the NFL record.

Senior Case Manager Adam Rocap joined Miriam's in January 2007.  Adam received a Master of Social Work degree from Catholic University and completed his undergraduate degree from Davidson College.  Adam's work experience includes a year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps working in a case management program for seniors, two years at the Green Door here in Washington, and a social work field placement at N Street Village here in the District.  Adam is interested in policy, advocacy, and ultimate frisbee.  His co-workers are interested in the compartmentalized Tupperware in which he brings his lunch every day.  Adam is an Aries, favorite color is green, and is always happy when he gets to brush up on his juggling skills at Miriam’s.  Adam can be reached at adam@miriamskitchen.org
