On Friday, March 1, the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) presented the Award for Community Service and Activism to two recipients, including Miriam’s Kitchen. This annual recognition is reserved for community service and social justice organizations operating in the city where the ESS convenes each year.
The Award for Community Service and Activism honors organizations that actively address significant social issues, empower marginalized communities, promote community involvement and social-political participation among underrepresented groups, and effect positive change in their localities. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., Miriam’s Kitchen exemplifies these criteria through our relentless efforts to combat homelessness and hunger in the nation’s capital.
MK’s mission to end chronic homelessness aligns perfectly with the award’s objectives. Beyond providing meals, we offer comprehensive support services to individuals experiencing homelessness, aiming to break the cycle of poverty and marginalization. Through advocacy, education, and outreach, we address immediate needs and work toward systemic change, advocating for policies prioritizing housing and social welfare.
This award means a lot to us, validating our efforts to effect positive change in our community. More than recognition, the award comes with a stipend and the opportunity to converse with scholars during the ESS annual meeting. This allowed us to share our experiences, exchange ideas, and collaborate with others in sociology and social justice.
