Miriam’s Kitchen joined organizations around the country this year to commemorate Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. Held every November, HH Awareness Week brings together people from across the country to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Here’s a brief look at our week of events!
We Took Strides to End Chronic Homelessness
Our week of events got started on Saturday with the Run 4 MK. We enjoyed some beautiful weather running along the C&O Canal in Georgetown. Thank you to the hundreds of runners who showed up to run in our 5K, 10K, and 500M Fun Run!
An Important Conversation About Housing and Homelessness
The week continued on Tuesday with a virtual panel featuring Miriam’s Kitchen, government and community leaders about the next steps to end homelessness in Washington, D.C. A big thank you to Rachel Pierre (DC Department of Human Services) and Robert Warren (People for Fairness Coalition) for sharing their time and talents with us.
Celebrating Our MK Community and the Guests We Serve
On Thursday, we celebrated our second annual GuestFest, a fall festival-style event for our guests that included a catered meal, hot chocolate/cider stations, and a popcorn machine! We also handed out “swag bags” that included warm-weather items, blankets, and toiletries for each one of our guests.
A Documentary Screening and Networking Event
Our commemoration of HH Awareness Week concluded on Friday night as we came together for a screening of “Street Reporter,” a documentary starring former MK guest Sheila White. Afterward, we held a brief Q&A with Sheila and Reggie Black (of Street Sense Media) and got to chat and network with our MK community. Thanks to all who came!
Thank you to our Miriam’s Kitchen community for joining us during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, and all year round. We’re grateful for the opportunity to grow our community and build up support for housing justice. Stay connected with MK for other upcoming events during the holiday season, and we hope to see you soon!
