The Secure DC Bill Will Not Make Us Safer

March 1, 2024

In January, Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto introduced The Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act of 2024 with support from Mayor Bowser. This legislation is riddled with harmful policies and laws that will result in more people being jailed without cause, longer sentences, increased police violence, and reductions in police transparency. It will not make DC safer.

Our unhoused neighbors are already targeted by law enforcement at a disproportionate rate. This legislation will only give police more power to unjustly detain and incarcerate people with no accountability, further exacerbating the homelessness-jail cycle.

National experts and local community leaders know that investing in resources and services for the community, not cops and mass incarceration, is the way to make our community safer.
