All volunteers must commit to at least one shift per month on an ongoing basis. By attending our orientation, you acknowledge and agree to this commitment. Please note you must attend an orientation before you can begin volunteering.

What Do Volunteers Do?

All volunteers need to verify their vaccination status.

Kitchen Shifts

Volunteers help with simple kitchen tasks and serving meals. No cooking skills are required!

Breakfast: Monday – Friday, 6:00-8:30 am
Dinner: Monday – Friday, 3:00-5:30 pm

Dining Room Shifts

Volunteers package to-go boxes and serve drinks.
Breakfast: Monday – Friday, 6:00-8:15 am
Dinner: Monday – Friday, 3:30-5:15 pm

Guest Services Shifts

Volunteers hand out toiletries and clothing bags to our guests.
Breakfast: Monday – Friday, 6:00-8:15 am
Dinner: Monday – Friday, 3:30-5:15 pm

Coffee Prep Shifts

Volunteers assemble cream and sugar packets – we go through 800 a day!
Monday – Friday, 9:00-11:00 am

Social Services Prep Shifts

Volunteers organize our clothing closet and put together clothing bags for our guests.
Monday – Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am

In order to start volunteering with Miriam’s Kitchen, you must first attend a volunteer orientation session. Please visit the Events page on our website to find the date and time of our next volunteer orientation.

We are currently only bringing on volunteers who can commit to joining us once a month on an ongoing basis.

We have over 1,500 individual volunteers and 150 corporate partners

No. All of our volunteer opportunities are Monday-Friday. If you wish to volunteer on the weekend, please volunteer on our behalf at the Capital Area Food Bank or with Grate Patrol. Grate Patrol delivers breakfast to homeless men and women on Saturdays and Sundays at 5:45 am. You sure can! You will not be administering the case management services; you will be helping our guests in other ways and assisting our case managers.

We’re located at the corner of 24th and G Streets NW, and just a few blocks from the Foggy Bottom metro stop. (Orange/Blue lines) We have limited parking for your car or bike in our garage – the entrance is located to the right of the main entrance. Whether you are driving, biking, walking or flying to your volunteer shift, please enter through the kitchen door at the bottom of our garage (please don’t use our guest entrance to the left of the main entrance). 

Comfortable closed-toe shoes, 3/4 length or longer pants, short sleeved shirt. No tank tops, shorts, skirts, yoga pants or excessive jewelry. Please wear clothing that you are ok getting a little dirty or sweaty. Heads must be covered in the kitchen. All long hair must be restrained, in addition to being covered.  We suggest you bring your own hat, but we do have a limited number of hats or hairnets.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old in the kitchen and in the dining room.

Kids can participate inour Trail Mix Program or organize a donation drive for us. We are always looking for people to organize a food or toiletries drive on our behalf. 

If you must leave early or come late for your shift, please cancel the shift and select one that better fits your schedule.
