A Culinary Journey of Hope and Empowerment

Miriam’s Kitchen Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Honoring the Contribution of Black Male Leaders in the Community.

Washington, D.C. (January 11, 2024) – In commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Miriam’s Kitchen is excited to announce a special event: the ‘Breakfast of Hope and Empowerment.’ This unique occasion is dedicated to celebrating community service and paying homage to the enduring legacy of the civil rights icon.

A Meaningful Day of Reflection and Unity
Continuing the spirit of Dr. King’s contributions to justice and equality, Miriam’s Kitchen invites volunteers and the community to join this impactful event. Volunteers, Black male leaders from the community, will join Executive Sous Chef May in serving Miriam’s Kitchen guests, embodying the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment. His journey from a corporate construction background to culinary excellence began when he attended a breakfast organized by Miriam’s Kitchen Executive Chef Cheryl Bell, in collaboration with the Western Presbyterian Church’s men’s ministry. “It marked my introduction to the world of serving, leaving an indelible impression on my heart,” Executive Sous Chef May recalls.

– Date and Time: January 15, 7:00 to 8:00 a.m.

– Location: Miriam’s Kitchen, 2401 Virginia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037

– Event Highlights: Guests will experience a heartfelt breakfast served by black men from the community, representing hope, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Following the breakfast, a barber will provide services to the guests, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

Miriam’s Kitchen is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where individuals from all walks of life can discover inspiration, receive support, and access the tools needed to rebuild their lives. Sous Chef May’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of hope and the positive impact that genuine representation can have on those we serve. In line with the principles upheld by Martin Luther King Jr., Miriam’s Kitchen remains committed to building a brighter future for everyone by actively embodying the spirit of justice and equality.

About Miriam’s Kitchen

Founded in 1983 as a soup kitchen, Miriam’s Kitchen has evolved over the years to provide more than meals. Today, Miriam’s Kitchen is a critical player in the fight to end chronic homelessness in D.C. On the direct services level, we serve more than 3,000 men and women experiencing homelessness—helping them to improve their health, increase their income, and obtain housing through various programs and partnerships. And at the systems level, we work with leaders across the city to make instances of homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.
