Scott Schenkelberg has led Miriam’s Kitchen since 2002. He is responsible for setting the strategic vision and planning, implementing strategic communications, and increasing revenue to support the organization’s growth. Under Scott’s leadership, Miriam’s Kitchen has grown from a morning meal and case management program with seven staff to a leader in ending chronic homelessness in the District of Columbia through advocacy, supportive services in permanent supportive housing, and street outreach with nearly 90 staff. Miriam’s Kitchen was awarded: the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s AIM Award (2018); the Bank of America Neighborhood Builders (2015); the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s EXCEL Award (2012) and the Meyer Foundation’s Exponent Award for excellence in chief executive leadership (2010). Miriam’s Kitchen was featured in a case study in Measuring Social Change: Performance and Accountability in a Complex World, by Professor Alnoor Ebrahim, in 2019, and Scott was a guest lecturer at Tufts and the Harvard Kennedy School on this work, in 2018 and 2019. During Scott’s tenure, Miriam’s Kitchen was also a finalist for the 2012 Board Leadership Award from the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and received an honorable mention for our impressive board practices. Miriam’s Kitchen has been named Washington Business Journal’s Best Place to Work in Greater Washington in 2009, 2010, and 2016 and Washingtonian’s Great Places to Work in 2011 and 2013. Scott is a Board Member of America’s Charities and Board Chair of America’s Charities Community First. He holds a BA from Grinnell College.
